Cross Reality

Cross reality (xR) is a generic term for VR, AR, MR and other forms of representation and superimposition of computer-aided content.

Virtual reality (VR) is the representation and perception of a computer-generated interactive environment in a virtual space. Special hardware is used to experience virtual reality. The user’s real outside world is completely hidden.

Augmented reality (AR) is an enhanced reality that is enriched with superimposed computer-generated information. The overlay is displayed either via special glasses or via camera information on smartphones or other hardware. Example: Pokémon Go.

Mixed reality (MR) represents an extension of the AR world in that physical properties of the computer-generated information are linked to reality. Example: A virtual element is pushed over a table and falls down at the edge of the table.
